I am what can only be described as 'an addictive personality'. My children laugh about the fact that "Mum is always joining a new club or class, or really getting into some new scheme". At the time, all of these schemes seem 'life changing' of course ...... until I give them up to go on to something else!
But I am also addictive at a physical level. My biggest addiction is definitely smoking. And there's no giving that one up it seems. I have tried and failed so many times. And here in Spain cigarettes are cheap, so giving up isn''t such an economic necessity as in the UK. In fact, when I go to England I smoke a lot less, simply because I can't afford it. And now, with the 'public smoking ban', there are so few places to smoke anyway, apart from in the street (uness you are standing at a bus shelter because smoking is banned there too) that I can go for hours and hours without a cigarette, especially with the weather in the UK as bad as it has been lately!
The other thing that keeps me smoking is the 'weight issue'. Every time I try to give up, not only does my appetite increase unbearably, but my metabolic rate seems to slow right down, so each time I try I put on pounds and the only way to get rid of them is to start smoking again! As I've said before, keeping slim is a bit of an issue for me, but I would also like to remain healthy, so it's obviously a 'Catch 22' situation one might say. But it doesn't stop me trying to give up ...... if only I could find a way ....
But recently I have discovered a new addiction - a 'food' one. You see, despite my insistence on keeping slim, I still love chocolate. Without my daily 'chocolate fix' I am grouchy and not at all nice to know! But in moderation chocolate is ok .... isn't it ....? Ok, so no worries there ....
Except that here in Spain I have discovered 'Copas'. I may be explaining something here that others know about already, but I had never seen real 'copas' until I moved to Spain.
Copas are cups of chocolate mousse, covered in a layer of thick (probably synthetic) cream. Not the healthiest of things to eat (but hey, they do contain calcium....) but we are not talking about health here - this is pure enjoyment!
Copas come in all shapes and sizes: from the more expensive 'brand makes' in fancy pots, to the 'supermarket specials' which cost around 17cents each. So cheap, but so nice! I actually prefer the 'supermarket specials'; they are large - the size of at least two yoghurts - and the synthetic cream (probably full of additives...) is really tasty!
So every day now I must have a copa ...... and if it's a really 'bad day', maybe two. And I can justify this by telling myself that there are less calories in a copa than in a bar or chocolate.
Not sure that's right though ...... but never mind, I'll probably be addicted to something else soon anyway!
